Nuclear-armed North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile beyond Japan on October 4 for the first time in five years, prompting a temporary suspension of train services in northern Japan and authorities warning residents to take precautions.
The missile appeared to have flown over Japanese territory before crashing into the Pacific Ocean, prompting the Japanese government to warn its citizens to protect themselves.
It was the first time North Korea had conducted a missile test in that direction since 2017, and the Japanese government said the missile, which reached a range of 4,600 kilometers, may have reached the longest range of North Korea’s missile tests. North Korea usually only launches missiles into space to avoid flying over neighboring countries.
United States North Korea conducted its fifth missile test in 10 days while South Korea and Japan staged a military show of force. In the last week, the United States South Korea Japan’s three allies held joint anti-submarine warfare drills, including a US aircraft carrier. A US aircraft carrier has docked in South Korea for the first time since 2017.
While the United States has remained relatively silent on North Korea’s recent missile tests, it has been increasing its military presence in the Asian region. The US is focused on the war in Ukraine and other domestic and foreign crises.
Regarding North Korea’s recent missile test, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinking told Japan, South Korea held talks with the foreign minister and strongly condemned North Korea’s actions. In addition, the foreign ministers of the three countries condemned North Korea’s disregard for the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, which caused consequences that greatly affected regional stability.
Japan’s Defense Minister Yasuka Zuhamada has said that while North Korea has repeatedly conducted missile tests, it will not discard any option, including the ability to strengthen its defenses and counterattack. South Korea has also said it will increase its military strength.
